The Southern live oak (Quercus virginiana) is a member of the white oak group of trees and has many interesting facts and characteristics, including:
  • Appearance
The Southern live oak is a large, spreading, and long-lived tree with a rounded crown. It can grow to be 50 ft tall and have a trunk diameter of up to 79 in. The tree's lower limbs sweep the ground and then curve upward. The leaves are elliptical, dark green, and glossy on top, and whitish and hairy on the bottom.

  • Habitat
The Southern live oak is native to the Southeastern coast of the United States, from Virginia to Florida, and as far west as Texas and Oklahoma. It can thrive in almost any location.

  • Ecosystem
The Southern live oak is a keystone species that provides shade and habitat for many organisms, including birds, mammals, insects, and other plants.

  • Wood
The wood of the Southern live oak is strong and resistant to decay, making it a popular choice for cabinetry, furniture, flooring, and boatbuilding.

  • Acorns
The Southern live oak produces sweet, tapered acorns that are eaten by birds and mammals. Acorns germinate quickly and in high percentages if the site is moist and warm.

  • Other uses
The swollen, tuber-like roots of seedlings were fried and eaten in the south. Some Native Americans extracted an oil from the acorns for its scent or cooking.

  • State tree
The Southern live oak is the state tree of Georgia.
